The first and only mayor of St. Petersburg Anatoly Sobchak died on the night of February 19-20, 2000. According to the official conclusion of forensic experts, the cause of death was acute heart failure. Earlier, Sobchak had three heart attacks.

Sobchak experienced childhood in Uzbekistan. In 1956, he joined the Law Faculty of Leningrad State University. From 1973 to 1981 – Associate Professor of Yurfak, from 1982 – Doctor of Law and Professor of Faculty.

In 1989, Sobchak became a deputy of the Soviet Union. Propaganda posters for Sobchak were trapped by future President Dmitry Medvedev. Vladimir Putin, who has been working with him since 1990, Alexey Kudrin, Anatoly Chubais and many others, left him since 1990.

On June 12, 1991, Sobchak was elected Mayor Leningrad, and he returned the historic name to City-ST. According to the mayor's initiative, the largest international economic festival and cultural festivals began to be held in the Northern capital.
